September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about this important issue. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention suggests that talking to someone at risk is a crucial first step in helping them. Contrary to concerns that discussing the topic may worsen the situation, research indicates that asking about suicidal thoughts does not increase suicidal ideation.
The National Institute of Mental Health provides guidance on how to have these conversations, outlining five action steps to take when supporting a friend.
